Save lives, sandbag!

Sandbagging operations are really community-based projects, as it is the people that do it, and not government nor any other big project holders. The neighborhood concerned is invited through their leaders who are their natural links to such initiative. Families, relatives, friends, networks, victims and friends of victims, certainly come to participate.

Mobilizing communities for sandbagging efforts along riverbanks, waterways and roads to prevent waters from flowing into residential areas, however temporary, have proven quite effective, not only in disaster mitigation but also in enhancing people’s direct participation in rebuilding their lives and communities. These activities lift their spirit and belief in their power to overcome. It is a community protection project, physically, while is also an empowering process for them, allowing them to directly get into disaster mitigation plans rather than wait passively for some groups to do it.

The money will be used to purchase sacks to augment those that will be collected from the community, and maybe provide coffee for the actual sandbaggers as they go about the work. The project needs to gather as many sacks as possible for the improvised dike to reach certain protective height. When built, these can buy the people time until a more lasting solution to the flooding is delivered by government.
